Kalin's First Deer

On the opening morning of Kalin's first
deer hunt (that he had a tag), we jumped in
the old truck that Terry used to go hunting
in with his dad when he was a kid, and headed
out! We first went up above the
KOA north of Glendale. It was really thick
up there, but we did see a huge buck - running!
So he didn't take any shots,
but we saw some great country!
Here is the view down on the KOA...
Here is the view from the KOA up
to where we were looking down.
Most of the fall leaves were gone,
but there were still a few trees
that hadn't dropped their leaves yet.
The quakies were so pretty!
After going on a few hikes and having
lunch, we all got a little tired...
Monday morning Terry & Kalin
went back out after taking Sunday off.
They headed out to the sand dunes
and then spotted this nice little
4-point.
He dropped it with one shot.
The mighty hunter!
Great job, Kalin!
Kalin was pretty excited - and
so was Dad! It's always fun to
pass along the old hunting stories
& traditions to your kids. And
teach an appreciation for our rights and
that meat doesn't just come from the store.
I think Kalin's hooked!
The fun thing for me was that he
got his first deer on my birthday!
And he shot it with the gun that
I shot my first deer with:
a Winchester 30.30 lever action
with open sights. It's a great gun!
I think I was more excited for him
than I was when I got my first one!
It was a fun hunt - we were a little sad
when it was over!
